A 12-year-old girl was killed after she lay down on railway tracks and waited for a speeding train in an apparent suicide, Tokyo police said Wednesday.
The elementary school student died after she was hit by a freight train just after 5 a.m. on the JR Yokosuka line between Nishi-Oi and Musashikosugi stations in Shinagawa Ward on Tuesday.
A letter from the girl that appeared to be a farewell note was found at her home.
“Given the circumstances, we suspect she committed suicide,” a police spokesman said.
Japan has one of the world’s highest suicide rates, with more than 31,000 people taking their own lives in 2010.
