Kyoudoushinken means joint custody. In Japan, only sole custody exists.  After divorce one parent is given sole custody of the child and the other parent often disappears.  In western countries, as well as China and Korea, a form of joint custody is practiced. Both parents have meaningful contact with their child after divorce.  Most studies show it is best to have 2 loving parents in a child’s life.
