MIE —
Police said Tuesday they have arrested a 24-year-old woman for allegedly fatally abusing her 10-month-old daughter at their home in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture.

According to police, the woman, identified as Keiko Iwai, has admitted to the charge. She was quoted as saying that she beat her daughter Aika about the head several times between Oct 1 and 3 because she wouldn’t stop crying, NTV reported. Aika’s condition worsened on Oct 6 and her father called an ambulance. However, the baby was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. The hospital then notified police.

Iwai lived with her husband, 2-year-old son and Aika. Neighbors told media that they had heard a baby crying on many occasions over the past few months.

Police said that Iwai was first seen beating Aika while she was in her baby carriage at a supermarket in Nagoya on April 30. A witness noted the number plate on her car and the store manager gave it to local police who informed Mie prefectural police. A police officer visited the home and Iwai admitted hitting Aika to discipline her, NTV reported.

Police said they warned Iwai on two occasions to stop hitting Aika. Child welfare officers visited Iwai in May and again in June, August and September to check on Aika’s condition, but said the baby showed no signs of physical abuse, so there was nothing they could legally do.
