Police in Kinokawa, Wakayama Prefecture, arrested a 22-year-old man early Saturday on suspicion of fatally stabbing an 11-year-old boy as he walked home from school on Thursday afternoon.

The boy, Toshi Morita, was attacked a few hundred meters from his school at around 4 p.m. Thursday. A local resident saw a man running away from the boy after the attack and called 119.

Speaking at an early morning news conference, police identified the suspect as Oshu Nakamura, an unemployed man who lives about 150 meters from the scene of the murder, TBS reported. He was arrested at around 1:30 a.m., but has denied the charge.

Police said Oshu lived with his parents and was reclusive, although some neighbors recalled seeing in front of his house occasionally swinging a bamboo sword. Police said he fit the description of a man seen wearing goggles and carrying knives near the vacant lot where the boy’s body was found.

Morita was airlifted to hospital by helicopter but died shortly after arrival, police said, adding he had 10 wounds on his body, which appear to have been inflicted by different weapons.
