Woman, partner arrested over death of her 3-year-old daughter

SAITAMA — January 13th, 2016

Police in Sayama, Saitama Prefecture, have arrested a couple on suspicion of abandoning responsibility for Fujimoto’s 3-year-old daughter, whose body was found with burn marks on her face. Police believe the girl’s death may have been the result of recurring domestic abuse.

The suspects, Ayaka Fujimoto, 22, and her common-law husband Yuki Okawara, 24, are accused of abandoning responsibility for Fujimoto’s second oldest daughter Hazuki after she had suffered severe burn injuries, which led to her death, Fuji TV reported. Fujimoto also has a 4-year-old daughter.

According to police, on Jan 9, Okawara called police reporting that the girl’s body was cold when he woke up. When officers arrived at the scene, Hazuki was lying face up in her futon. She was confirmed dead at the scene.

According to police, the couple has admitted that they never took Hazuki to a hospital despite being aware that the child had suffered burn injuries. Fujimoto also admitted to scalding Hazuki’s face with boiling water.

Besides burn injuries on her face, Hazuki’s body also bore traces of other scars and injuries, leading police to believe that the child may have been abused on a regular basis, officials said.

Neighbors were quoted by police as saying that at the end of last year they could hear loud children’s cries coming from the suspects’ house, often for up to an hour, and that they had not seen the children since.

Police also revealed that they had been summoned by neighbors on two occasions last June and July after residents had witnessed the children locked outside the house. At the time, however, police found no signs of abuse on either child and no reports were made to the local child consultation centers.

Parents arrested after 8-month-old baby dies of suspected malnutrition, neglect

Posted on April 6, 2016. Filed under: Abuse Neglect Death | Tags: , , |

HIROSHIMA — March 4th, 2016

Police have arrested the parents of an 8-month-old baby boy who was found dead of suspected malnutrition and neglect in the city of Kure in Hiroshima Prefecture.

According to police, Mao Arai, 41, and his wife Ayaka, 22, did not feed their son Rito since early February and did not take any measures to help him despite being aware that his health was deteriorating, Fuji TV reported.

On Wednesday morning, the husband called emergency services, informing them that his son’s “body was cold.” When authorities arrived at the site, they found the baby lying on a futon in a state of cardiac arrest. He was later pronounced dead.

There were no injuries on Rito’s body, but his ribs were showing and he was visibly underweight. According to investigators, he weighed four kilograms, half the average for his age.

The family lived in a two-story house, with the baby staying in a room on the first floor, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police found no other items but a futon in the child’s room and there was no baby food in the house.

Neighbors were quoted by police as saying that they weren’t aware that the couple had a child, because they had never seen him.

The two suspects are apparently providing conflicting statements, with the wife telling police that she “could not care enough for the child,” while the husband is denying neglect, saying that the baby was not weak and that they had been caring for him.

Woman gets 11 years for throwing 5-year-old son to his death from 13th-floor apartment

Posted on April 6, 2016. Filed under: Abuse Neglect Death | Tags: , , |

TOKYO — March 24th, 2016

A 35-year-old woman on Wednesday was sentenced to 11 years in prison for killing her 5-year-old son by throwing him from a window in their 13th-floor apartment in Tokyo’s Arakawa Ward in December 2014.

The sentence was handed down by the Tokyo District Court against Ai Kato who had pleaded not guilty.

Kato had testified that she left the window open in the bedroom where her son Koki Takahashi was and then had gone to the toilet, Sankei Shimbun reported. When she returned, the boy’s body was lying on the ground below at around 11:15 p.m. on Dec 29, 2014.

The boy’s father looked for his son when he got home and became concerned. A passerby saw the child’s body on the ground and called 110.

The presiding judge said it was not plausible to believe that Koki unlocked and opened the window and then fell out by accident, Sankei reported.

The court heard that Koki’s father had consulted police a week earlier about an incident on Dec 23 when his wife tried to strangle the boy with a cord while at a hotel.

Prosecutors said that Kato initially told police she did not have confidence in her ability to raise a child and that she just wanted to live alone with her husband.

The court also heard that Kato had been shoplifting because she was stressed and that her husband had told her he would divorce her if she ever shoplifted again.
