TOKYO — January 28th, 2016

Police in Tokyo’s Ota Ward said Wednesday they have arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of fatally beating the 3-year-old son of the woman he was living with.

According to police, the boy’s mother, who is in her 20s, notified emergency services at around 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, saying that her son had a fever and was not responding, Fuji TV reported.

Upon arrival at the apartment, ambulance personnel found the boy in a state of cardio-respiratory arrest and he was immediately taken to a hospital. He died about 90 minutes later of what doctors believe was a subdural hematoma, but an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Police said the boy, identified as Ayato Arai, had visible bruises on his cheeks and buttocks, and was bleeding from his left ear, prompting them to question the mother and her partner about whether they have been abusing the boy.

On Wednesday afternoon, the woman’s boyfriend, Naoya Nagatomi, admitted to beating and kicking the boy for an hour on Tuesday night because he glared at him during dinner. The boy’s mother was quoted by police as saying she tried to stop her boyfriend from assaulting Ayato but she, too, was hit.

Media reported Wednesday night that Nagatomi was a member of a criminal gang and that he moved in with the woman and her son this month.
