CRIME OCT. 04, 2012 – KANAGAWA —
Police and mental health specialists are assessing the criminal liability of a woman who has confessed to stabbing to death her two daughters at their home in Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Wednesday night.

The woman, who has been named as 42-year-old Masako Nagato, lived with her 9-year-old and 9-month-old daughters in an apartment, police said Thursday.

The bodies of the children were discovered by the woman’s mother who visited the apartment at around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, Fuji TV reported. Police say they believe Nagato was taking a bath with her two daughters when she stabbed them with a fruit knife. The victims were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.

During police questioning, Nagato was quoted by investigators as saying she had stabbed her daughters, “to protect them,” Fuji reported. A doctor who spoke to Nagato told police that she had had a history of depression and inability to get good sleep, for which she had been receiving regular treatment.

However, the doctor was quoted as saying that Nagato had stopped attending hospital for treatment around a year and a half ago and had not been taking her medication.
