SENDAI —February 25th, 2015

Police in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, said Tuesday they have arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of beating his 4-year-old son.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Yoshikazu Sato, a company employee, beat his son about the head at their apartment on Monday morning. NTV reported that the boy’s head hit the floor and he lost consciousness. His father then took him to the hospital where staff notified police about a case of possible abuse.

Police said the boy regained consciousness Tuesday but had suffered a subacute subdural hematoma.

Sato was quoted by police as saying he hit his son because he wouldn’t do as he was told.

Police said the boy, who is Sato’s second oldest son, suffered abuse at his father’s hands two years ago. At that time, the boy was placed in the custody of a child welfare center. However, last December, the boy was allowed to go back home.

SENDAI — June 15th, 2014

Police in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, said Saturday they have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of fatally abusing the 2-year-old daughter of his former girlfriend.

According to police, Kazuya Saidoguchi, a construction worker in Sendai, faces child abuse charges after it was reported that on the evening of June 4, while looking after Hotaru, the daughter of his former girlfriend, he roughly pinched her face and other parts of her body, inflicting several injuries.

The child’s 20-year-old mother told police she noticed that there was something wrong with Hotaru when she returned home from her job at a bar early on June 9, TBS reported. Hotaru had also been left in Saidoguchi’s care that night. The mother then took Hotaru to a hospital where the child died on June 12, police said.

TBS quoted police as saying that they strongly believe the child was subjected to regular physical and possibly other forms of abuse at the hands of Saidoguchi.

Saidoguchi was quoted by police as saying he pinched the girl’s face and hit her to discipline her.

Although Saidoguchi and the child’s mother had broken up, she often asked him to babysit for Hotaru, police said.

Bullied boy’s parents file criminal charges

Posted on August 9, 2012. Filed under: Bullying | Tags: , , |

The parents of a 16-year-old boy in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, have filed charges against classmates who bullied him at school.

The case follows the high profile suicide of a bullied junior high school student from Otsu in Shiga Prefecture which hit headlines nationwide.

Fuji TV reported Tuesday that since last November, the boy was punched and had his arm burned with cigarettes over 20 times. In July, the bullying had become so severe that the boy could no longer attend school.

The boy’s parents told reporters that the school felt the boy’s burns were disturbing other students and subsequently asked him to leave the school, Fuji reported. The school has so far refused to comment to media.

Following his expulsion, the boy’s parents said they decided to take action to force his assailants to confess to bullying him.

In the Japanese media, the filing of criminal charges is being taken as a sign that students are becoming more likely to speak out against their tormentors now that bullying has become a national talking point.

Police say an investigation into the nature of the alleged bullying is now underway.
